Archived Items/files - ? lost.

Hello -

A window came up asking me to click if I wantd to archive files - to save space, I think. I clicked and now I cannot find the files anywhere. If anyone knows how I can find them (I don't even know which files have been 'archived') I'll really appreciate it.

Thank you

Crimson

What operating system are you running?
Would also help if you remember what you were doing when the window came up - logging in, reading email, browsing etc...

  • Hello Victor2

I have Windows 7. I think I was on email (Microsoft Outlook 2003) but I had been browsing just before. I tried the archive folder in the dropdown list on my email but it is empty.

    Thank you for your reply.

It sounds like Outlook has run the AutoArchive utility. Is it just your earlier emails that you can't find? If that's the case, then they are not lost, just tucked away somewhere else.

Do you actually know for a fact of any one single file that's been archived ? I've never known it !

I don't think anything has been archived, from time to time it ' cleans up ' space left when you have deleted mail or spam. I think you will find it neither deletes nor archives anything Deleted_User.

  • Hello bengalknights and the others -

Now I'm really scared and I think I'll leave well alone! I found in Outlook email -Archive, Data File Management and Clicked in turn on both options - Archive and Personal.

A caution note came up saying that I was attempting to open a file of type 'Office Data File' (.pst) and Editing or Modifying it could damage my system. I don't know enough - so I'll just assume my archived documents, emails or files are lost somewhere but are either fully deleted or are lost for ever.

Will I "block" or "clog" my system if, in future, when prompted to autoarchive, I just ignore it? I'm not sure what is best to do. Any information appreciated.

    Thank you.

Hi Crimson, did you try to open it in Windows Explorer? I assume so hence the caution note.
In Outlook goto file / Open / Outlook Data File

You must open the file using outlook.

To disable autoarchive just goto options-other-autoarchive and untick the box, it shouldnt male a difference to your system other than using up slightly more space then when its compacted.
