Internet banking is the best thing ever. Very rarely do I need to go into a branch these days and the only time I need to phone them up is if I'm activating a new card.

The banking experience is changing every year. Cheques are almost gone, and if we ever get round to doing away with cash altogether, there will no longer be a need for a bricks & mortar branch network.
Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.

Of course, there was hardly any account fraud in those days either, so technology has just made life easier for the criminals.:)
  • I have always wondered what it was like in the days of no ATM's, bank managers that made all the choices etc..

Something that I never had the chance to experience!

One time I sent a cheque (not too small) to a local bank with a letter asking to open an account. I think it was RBS. They returned the cheque with a brief note to say I could not have an account with them. When I 'phoned to ask why the manager just repeated that I couldn't have an account. To this day I am annoyed with myself for not following up on that one. I've learned since!

Today that letter would be followed up with "We can't do it just on the basis of a letter, but if you'd like to come in we can see what we can do." Not just abruptly being told to go away by a manager.

Coupled with walesrob's post, I'm actually quite glad we have the banking system we do now. No decisions made on the strength of whether your manager thought highly of you or not, just on whether you can or can't afford the product based on the criteria the bank's set. Maybe less personal, definitely more fair.
