Help in between jobs?

Asking on behalf of my brother as he's in a bit of a tizz and I can't help him as benefits aren't my strongest point.

He was working temporary agency up until last thursday when he was let go. Work was slow and as a temp I guess this was the only option they had. He has found a new job which he doesn't start until the 7th March and will be paid weekly in arrears so won't get paid until the 18th March. So from now until then he hasn't got a penny coming in. Can he get any help to pay for food, bills, getting into work until then?

Not sure what his options are. Guessing JSA wouldn't be an option as he's not jobseeking?

Crisis loan? Or is this not really a crisis?

Any help would be gratefully received!

On another note his new job has asked him to do 6 x 12 hour days Monday to Saturday. He's that desperate for work he's said ok but is that legal? Or is it as long as he's 'opted in'?
;);) Better to say nothing and look a fool than to speak and remove all doubt :D:D

He can claim JSA and when he has to state why the previous job ended, put down "Temporary short term contract came to an end"

6x12hrs is legal if he signs an opt-out to the working time directive. He will meet the requirements for daily rest period of 11hrs and the weekly rest period of 24hrs.
  • Thanks Hammyman, I thought it might have been ok. I just thought it seemed an excessive ask.

Would his JSA claim not take longer to sort out than the time period he will be without money? His first wage would be on the 18th March and he would need petrol, food etc way before then. I don't know how organised the JC are about these things!

  • he should hear within 2 weeks, but if he doesn't make a claim he wont get anything at all. He need only look for temporary work to meet the 'actively seeking employment' rule
