Emulsion over varnished wood

Help ... !

I have kept the dado rails and was told that if I wanted them the same colour as the walls I could use the same emulsion paint.

Hmm. Not sure that it was a good idea. The wood was rubbed down but I don't think that the emulsion paint is going to be up to the job.

Has anyone done this successfully?

Thanks

Apart from being decorative the function of a dado rail is to protect a wall from contact with furniture. Rather defeats the objective if you paint it with emulsion, which is not so good for scuffs. What was wrong with them varnished?

If you coat is with PVA or a primer you will be able to paint onto it.

  • You can buy a primer which you paint on between the sanded varnish and the emulsion or there's a type you paint on and then wipe off. The former is what we did with our skirting boards when we painted them the same colour as the walls.

    It's only a game

  • For extra protection you could paint over the emulsion with clear varnish (matte or satin would stand out less than gloss).

Loads of reasons for it including covering up plasterboard joins when a property has been flooded.

But essentially now the reason is decoration.

Blimey thanks for the quick replies. I'd just gone off to do a bit more sanding.

I'm a bit red faced about this. I have painted the paper above and below the dado. After it was suggested to me that I could paint the dado rails with emusion, I did quite a bit of them as I was doing the paper. Thinking this would be the first coat. Now I am between a rock and a hard place with it I think.

Should I rub it all off again (30ft room)? Should I finish it all and then varnish (will this still option still not have enough purchase on the wood as there was no primer?) Should I buy satin paint in a similar colour (still got the no primer problem)?

I'm in the middle of rubbing the varnished doors down to be painted white; what tips here?

In answer to a previous question, I am only keeping the dado rails after a refurb, because I didn't want to go down the road of replastering and papering ( I kept the paper below the dado rail and replaced the paper above). They, and the doors, were a dark brown varnish; not what I wanted. The dado rails in the hall are being painted white satin.

Oh well, back to sanding. Will come back to see what you all think soon.

if you sand them down properly, water based paint will be ok.
the problem will be if they are fancy moulded ones. sanding them will not be easy. in that case id be tempted to buy new ones.
the simple ones are not that expensive.

There is a primer called B.I.N which allows you to paint over varnished wood, sold in small hardware stores.

As you have done good rub down and you can either undercoat and then emusion or use a satin wood finish what ever you do dont PVA its useless for painting applications
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You are planning to paint varnished doors?? Why not leave them ? Wood is beautiful.
