Constant roadworks outside our house... (vent!)

Hi everyone

We moved into our house last May... last owners were very elderly and house needed complete gutting and refreshing.

All went well over the summer months... then in September we had a letter from the water company saying they were upgrading the sewerage pipes on our street and the road would be closed from September until the end of March..

Sure enough works started and the road outside our house was closed, meaning we could no longer get our cars on the driveway and any workmen coming to the house also had access issues.

This continued for about 2 months and then they moved further down the road, so although the road was still blocked off we could access our house again around early December.

About two weeks ago I came home from work to see that the part of the road outside our house was blocked off again. This time we had no warning at all. It seems that the pipes they had laid need to be dug up and replaced again so back to square one... no access to house and diggers waking us up each morning.

Unfortunately this time, now we are entering spring, we are about to start building an extension at the back if our house - which is practically impossible to start now with no access for vehicles again.

Does anyone know if we gave any rights in this sort of situation? I appreciate the utility company is trying to improve the amenities but 7 months of road closure, lugging shopping down the road from the car in the rain, early morning wake up calls and disruption to our build plans without warning are taking their toll!

To top it off I received our £600 water bill for 2011 yesterday.

Rant over!

If they told you that the road would be closed until the end of March, then I'm not sure if there's much you can do unless it over runs. Unfortunately it sounds as though this is necessary maintenance work so I can't really see any benefit to obstructing them with a complaint, however annoying it must be to have so much upheaval.
