Smoke Bombs

Wilko have smoke bombs in stock.

Generally quite hard to find, use them for a full fumigation of your greenhouse or polytunnel to kill off creepy crawlies which have managed to overwinter.

Despite temps of -12 there are things flying around in my tunnel.....well there were.

Or for you organic types, a mixture of coffee, swiss cheese and donkey urine should do the trick.

I use carniverous plants in my greenhouse, organic and never have any problems with beasties
    :)
  • A friend gave us some smoke bombs a few years back but we were frightened of using them! We had visions of clouds of smoke filling the sky and the fire engine turning up! Just how much smoke does one bomb produce? Were we worrying for nothing? I have never actually seen one in use.

Smoke bomb my greenhouse! That would kill all my friendly spiders!!
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

The 'bomb' is about the size of a camera film container, made from metal with a small firework wick inside. It produces as much smoke as a small firework but it dissipates quite quickly leaving behind an acrid and unpleasant atmosphere. The container suggests leaving it all shut up for 2hrs but I chose 24hrs and the cursed black fly has all gone.

I shall follow it up with nematodes or ladybird larvae during the summer and some Dithane for mildew.

On a serious note I take my hat off to 'organic' gardeners but it is just not always practical, timely or possible given modern lifestyles and the fickle nature of some crops. For the organic and anti chemical new age purists however I say have you looked at the chemicals you sprayed under your arm in that deodorant can this morning ?
