Can't update itunes!

So frustrating!!
I keep getting upgrade downloads for itunes. About every other time I plug in my nano.
I try clicking to install and am told I cannot do this (after it tried to install for a good 5-10 mins). I then am told to try download only.
So I try download only. I get a list of 4 things to install after I have downloaded as instructed by itunes.
I then click to install but am told (after another 5-10 wait for it to attempt to install) that I cannot do this as I need Quick Time.
Quicktime is already on my computer, so I go to the control panel and click to repair it assuming there must be an error with it. It "repairs" fine and I go back to the download only tab to re-install everything.
Again, same error message saying I need Quick Time.
What am I doing wrong here?? I don't understand why this wont work and why this has never worked! It normally results in me having to completely uninstall itunes every 3 months and reinstall it, missing about 25% of my itunes catalogue each time.
Help!!
