Help! Avast antivirus link on this site killed my laptop!

I just downloaded the avast antivirus from the link on this site on to my new laptop. I did the pc scan, no infected files. My laptop was absolutely fine. then I kept getting error messages- couldn´t get on internet. I restarted it and there´s a blue screen saying "Fatal system error" and nothing happens.
Is there anything I can do? What´s happened?

Did you remove your old av first?

My technical knowledge is limited. Have you tried to boot into safe mode and do a system restore before you installed Avast?

To boot into Safe Mode reboot the computer. Before any writing appears start tapping F8 repeatedly untill you get a list saying

Start windows in safe mode with networking
Start Windows in safe mode
Start Windows normally.

Using your arrow keys go down to Start Windows in Safe Mode and hit enter. It will look different from what your used to.

Go to start, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. You'll have a box open that says Recommended Restore or Choose a Different Restore Point. Click on Different Restore Point and click next. You have a list of dates come up. Choose one before you installed Avast and let it take you through it. Good luck.
