Sickness info

Hi all
Just after some info if anyone can help...
I am out of work and still looking for new employment, my wife works 16hrs per week.... as a family we get working tax credit, housing benifit and child benifit.
2 weeks ago I was hit by a car while out on my mountain bike, I have since had to have surgery on my shoulder and have been told I am possibly going to be in a sling for another 5 to 10 weeks.
As I am not able to look for work at this time should I be reporting this?
Someone said to me that I might be eligable for sickness benifit, but if so would they not just stop or adjust our working tax cedit.
Sometimes I wonder if its better to just leave things as they are to not make things more complicated, but not sure if I am wrong for not mentioning my situation.
Any views would be helpfull
