Best back up solution - external hard drive?

Having benefited from the amazing help on this forum after my laptop went very sick, I'm looking for a fail-safe back up method.
We have wireless broadband, mainly using two laptops (plus smart phones and wii, but no paid-for TV services). We take digital photos, but not massive storage issues.
I'm assuming an external hard drive would be the way to go, but would appreciate thoughts on
a) is this a good assumption? and
b) should I go USB or opt for wireless that can sit in a cupboard and not get dusty?!
thanks for reading

Thanks - what does that do? Amazon has options with and without drives, and says it's a media server rather than an external hard drive.
Can anyone else help with what's a fairly basic, everyday need?

You just need anyone of the dozens of USB external HDD that are available at £50-60 per 1TB drive, you can get one much less depending on the size of your O/S. The Stora is more than three times the price and way OTT for your needsDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Just stick another hard drive in the system if you've got a free slot. 1Tb drives are not so expensive. Then use a backup utility (Windows 7 has an excellent one built in) just to backup your folders regularly (like daily) which have important files in them, a good utility only picks up the files which have changed. You can make a system image of your main drive to aid recovery if that drive fails.
Of course you could use an online backup service if you want to keep important data out of your house, and it doesn't worry you having a copy out there in cyberspace somewhere. The chance of your computer blowing up and frying both hard drives is slim, but exists, as does the chance of your house burning down and totally destroying your computer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. ^^ big advantage with the stora nas is that multiples machines can access -- without wires -- the drive simultaneously //BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!
