searching for a lost sister....

i wonder if you guys can point me in the right direction....i need a little (lots of :o) help.
my other half told me years back that he had a sister who was put into care when he was a little boy 45 odd years back, he thinks his sister was the result of an affair and his mother tried to abort her when pregnant leaving the baby with some sort of learning difficulty due to damage caused by the unsuccesfull abortion.
Fast forward 45 odd years and both my in laws are sadly deceased, any questions as to why/how/who/when etc will remain unanswered, all we now know is somewhere out there was/is my other halfs long lost sister and he has decided he`d like to find out what happened/maybe meet up now that its not going to cause his parents any upset.
He contacted Hertfordshire social services who said they had no record of her.
also hertfordshire library archives who found a record of her birth but no other info.
where do i try now?? i`ve no idea have never searched for anyone before ......
i found her name on 192.com at the same address as many others and assumed it was a care home only after joining up and paying for searches i cant seem to get any more info as is not working for me

If you've got an address, have you tried googling that? It might bring up confirmation that it is a care home / sheltered housing scheme, there might be a warden you could phone. Going through an intermediary would probably be sensible for the benefit of the sister.

we haven`t got an address as such...i have half a postcode that 192.com give you for free which leads to the Thetford area. my other half has already looked at local care homes in Thetford and phoned up one in particular that looked like a potential match maybe....the manager had no knowledge of anyone by that name and she had been there years.
i realise that after 45 years its like opening a big can of worms and its maybe that the can is best left closed, who knows what we will find!
we are very aware of not doing anything in a rush etc for the benefit of the sister as we are both carers for people with learning disabilities and will tread very carefully as any change from the norm can sometimes escalate emotions/anger easily.

    Have pmed you Angchris x
  • If you've paid for searches you should get full address, how long they've lived there and phone number (if available). If the listing is in our archives, you'll just need to upgrade to historical membership to access the record. PM me and we'll help you out.

Have you considered that her name may have been changed or different to that registered. Is it possible she was adopted? No answers but maybe some questions which might help. Good Luck

yes i did pay for the 192 search the £12.95 + £4.95 and am a bit scared of trying again just incase its more wasted money, perhaps i was having a bad day but no information came up or maybe i was just being a dippy moo (not uncommon lately lol!). will pm you katie thank you...

of course anything is possible nad, who knows what happened to her... but she has a very uncommon surname and provided she still uses the name should in theory be easy to trace. i just don`t know where to start.
can i just thank the lovely people who have pm`d me offering to help, this site is full of fabtastic peeps :T
