moved house just over a year ago. Left Perth with my Sony wega kd28dx50 tv which worked perfectly well and then arrived in Helensburgh and tried to tune it in and it wouldnt work. Tried everything including payin 50 quid for a guy to come and look at it but to no avail. Called Sony and they said that it wasnt not compatible and due to the digital switch I would now need a box. Now I know about the government changing the goalposts and could accept that the TV may not be fully equipped for the new digital signals but we don't go digital here until May. So why oh why will my tv not work on the freeview channels. I have tried retuning it and it doesnt work. Can anyone shed any light on this problem.

That's a seriously ancient television. Freeview has been through many technical changes since 2004, it's hardly surprising that the in-built digital tuner is having difficulties. What's your problem with buying a new freeview box? You can pick one up for around a quarter of the 50 quid you spent for a guy to come and look at it (the TV itself isn't worth that much).poppy100

Hi, some confusion in your post, - your state ' why will it not work on freeview channels' - you have already answered that yourself- because it is not compatable. However if you are correct about the switch over date then you should be able to recieve 'analogue' channels (BBC1/BBC2/1TV/CH4/CH5) until May.0

chap you paid to come out, did he check the direction of your aerial? Is the aerial a digital one, or is it one that has been hanging on to the chimney for 20 years or so?
I recall some years ago that there was compatibility problems with freeview boxes, maybe this is the case in this instance, same tech inside the TV as in the boxes.
We have a freesat box because we struggle to pick up too much with an ordinary aerial.
Have you asked your neighbours what they can pick up, and checked the direction of your aerial compared to theirs?
Just one other thing, are you sure the TV wasn't damaged in the move?
I would suggest taking it to a neighbours and trying it out on their aerial, but it is a little too big for that! Have you got any way of trying another TV on the same aerial? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Is the aerial a digital one,
no such a thing!0 -
For others worried about their equipment working after the switchover.

Age has nothing to do with it, you may need a higher gain or wide bandwidth aerial to receive freeview in your area, although after switch over your existing aerial may work fine. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Yes Geordieracer it is (in parts) and I am actually a Geordie ha ha!! As for the TV - yes I know I can use a freeview box and I know it is an old tv but I am just perplexed at sony's explanation and anyway I think if I paid 600 quid for a digital tv, then it should last longer than 7 years. I just cannot understand why it worked in Perth and not in Helensburgh. I tried to retune it but it says there is no signal so perhaps it is the aerial or it was damaged in the move, I can get the 4 analogue channels. Am gonna try borrowing a signal booster and then am going to give up.Smile though your bank is breaking:)0

Hi,
A bell rang, a number of early freeview boxes and TVs have stopped working due to changes made to the service, yours is almost certainly one of them.
Have a look at the attached list, no idea how olrd it is or if the sony number still works.
