Compressing MP3s

I've got a Samsung D500 and use the MP3 function on it quite a bit but would like to stick more music on there and have been advised to compress my files to get more on, but how do I do this? Can anyone recommend any decent free programs that will help?

You could lower the bit rate of the MP3 but this will lower the quality.

musicmatch allows you to resample at a lower bitrate, I dropped a lot of mine to 96kb for use on a Nokia 6230 and it seems fine, fits about 40/50 songs on a 128Mb card

MP3 is a compressed format. While 128kb files are acceptable once you drop the bitrate below that the quality really suffers.

What s/ware are u susing to 'get' your mp3 files to begin with??

I'm not, get them from my CDs and stick them onto my laptop

well what are u using to get them from your cd?

ok...lets just say this...if you are using windows get media player 10 (there are other software but i know this one works)

go to the menu at the top->tools>options->rip music tab and make sure format says mp3. you can choose where you want the mp3's to go to above that. click ok->apply.

Then click on the rip tab. insert your cd select the tracks to rip then click on rpi music button on top right of screen.

media player will go off and compress these files for you...
