Reasonably expensive clothes

Time has come for me to spend some good money on clothes, as it does make a difference at work.

I was thinking of getting some good shirts and suites; I want to spend around £40/50 for the shirts and £150 for the suits, for a total of around £1000.

What places do you suggest? I went to Thomas Pink for the shirts but it was too expensive (shirts in the 75/125 range).

I was thinking of getting to Moss Bros in central london, as I got a good suit for around 150 in the past.

Bluewater? Is it worth it?

Any other idea?

Thanks
mr

Have you tried going to a small independent tailors? Not like the ones on Saville Row, but further out from London. I got some suit trousers lengthened recently and was initially going to go to a well known dry cleaners to get them done, but decided to try a local tailor who has been open in Bradford for nearly 100 years. Affordable and wonderful quality (they added some material as backing to allow for the longest drop). They also made suits for around £100 and they did look really wonderful quality and would be the perfect fit.

Edit: East London would probably be the best place to look if you live around London as it is historically an area that has had a lot of tailors and dressmakers.

  • I would agree about a tailor. DH had a tailored suit made for his friend's wedding and it looks completely different on him than any suit I've seen him in before. The way the shoulders sit, the way it moves with him. Beautiful. And the shirts were lovely too.

For business wear, I like Austin Reed. The bigger department stores also have good choices. Having read about tailors above, I'll be considering that in future too!

Thank you for this idea, I would have never thought it was so affordable.

The only problem being I wouldn't know who to go to, so any suggestion on good contacts in this respect would be much appreciated.

    Thanks again

I don't currently live in London and would assume it would be a tad expensive to travel to Bradford! The tailor I went to was a really small traditional place. I imagine they would have been really bustling in their heyday. Old Sinatra posters on the walls, 50's prints of men in sharp suits. I would steer away from too fancy or chain type places as they will probably cost more and may not be very good quality. I like to think that I am supporting a local business that has been around for nearly 100 years. Skills that are dying out all too quickly in today's modern throw away society. I do shop in places like Primark as my budget is quite limited though I hate the feeling of guilt I have as I wonder what the conditions of the workers in the far east is who probably made most of it.

P.S. Just be careful when they measure you inner seams that theres no cupping involved!!

Bluewater? At this time of year? Are you quite mad?

I have never been there and thought it was a good idea, to get some ideas. You get the idea.

Is it such a bad idea?
Is it any worse than Oxford Street / Covent Garden / Regent Street?

I have some names to go to and the tailor idea, and with a good use of the Store Locators I suppose I am definitively not heading down to Bluewater, but would like to hear comments on it, so that I can judge better whether it is worth it next time.

    Thanks
