Thank you for all your posts. I've been down to M&S today and bought a beautiful purple orchid now!

I might be a bit simple here but how does an orchid in a vase with no soil work? Would someone please take some pics so I can see? Don't plants need compost to survive?!

they just sit in the vase, they arent like 'normal' houseplants that have to live in soil
its not been mentioned yet but i kept mine in its original pot, on a little saucer and pour water straight onto the saucer
the orchid draws up the water from the bottom, when the saucer is dry i water it again, again just putting water on the saucer
i bought mine from tesco nearly 2 years ago when it got reduced right down to a couple of pounds, it lost all but one of its flowers but its since flowered loads and hasnt stopped :)
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p

In the wild orchids actually grow on branches or rocks in the shade and where is damp and take in moisture through the roots , they don't grow on the ground or in soil.. so they do thrive even without soil, when you buy them they usually come in bark with some moss to keep them damp, I have some like this or some with no bark and just a piece of moss covering the top of the roots.. good luck with yours
