Statutory Paternity pay for the self employed?

Hi

I am self employed and my wife is due to give birth in the next week or so. As far as I can understand I am not entitled to statutory paternity. Is this correct? If so, are there any other entitlements that we may have?

Many thanks.
Chris

Once the baby is born there is child benefit and child tax credits
  • Hi,

Thanks. Who gets the tax credits? Is it me or my wife? She works on a PAYE basis and earns less than me...

In a sense, both of you - as Tax Credit awards are assessed on joint (household) income.

  • Thanks,

Will have a read through - did some digging before but didn't find it very clear.

I guess the main point is that I am deffo not entitled to Statutory paternity right? Feels a but unfair:(

I hadn't looked into it, but I think you're right. I found this on another site:
Only employees with employment contracts are entitled to statutory paternity pay. There is no equivalent for self-employed dads to claim. So if you are self-employed you are going to have to plan ahead to have time off at the birth of your baby.

  • That's what I thought. From what I understand, that comes from the government. If that's the case it feels a bit rough - especially after having just paid a fairly hefty tax bill!

You could always pay yourself paternity pay, I suppose. After all, you are your own employer.;)
