AAT do not provide home study, Kaplan do. AAT are the better qualification and the college I attend can only do the course over the period I am doing it, nothing any shorter!!

Once qualified after Level 4 and have the AAT after my name, I will be able to do all the above!!

Like I said earlier, I had no way of getting out in the evenings to attend evening classes as my son was not here at the time!
  • I can tell you now she would employ you without it and give you the time off to do your AAT basically because even though you've got the certificate you know nothing other than the basics.

The lady may well do but the field I was in before with the NHS would not have as it had no relevance to the work I was doing there!

I gave the job up to pursue a career that would give my children a better stability for the future!!

My son has only just moved back in with me in the last month, he lived with his dad for 12 years 108 miles away, so it was impossible to ask him to look after his sister then !!

I study, have a 3yr old and a full time job
seemed crazy to give up my job to attend uni for a few hours a week (not a degree course)
how do i do it? I pay for childcare. My course is spread over 2-3 days/evenings,term dependent
so why didnt you keep your FT job and pay for childcare. seems you made a choice based on using the benefits system to allow you to do what you wanted to do.
what income does the 19 year old have then?
    what maintenance is father paying?
I dont accept the line of you were trying to better yourself, you are studying at the cost to the taxpayer. you attend 1 day a week, plus will have all the school holidays off.
you have a child at school.so what do you do all day?
what qualifications does this course provide?

I have never been work shy and have always worked even when my children were babies, I have also been a single mum to them both and no not through choice either!

Once qualified I will be earning a lot more than most people on here will be able to, hence why I have taken the route I have taken but I have just come across a stumbling block at the moment.

nice, but you are happy for them to support you and your family while you slave away on that one day course?

(You appear to have miscounted the number of replies that offered advice - my constructive post seems to have been unjustly uncounted?!?!)

The site's title is Money SAVING Expert. That 'saving' is not just about reductions and wheezes it also covers savings and managing income. Indeed Martin is engaged in silly campaigns to provide education about financial matters.

No-one who has been continually receiving a known income for years should be in a situation where they can not ride a trivial temporary hic-cough. You cut your cloth. A grown adult in charge of a young child should not be emptying her account every time it is topped up. If you care for children then you behave like an adult.

Of course everyone will occasionally ride the wind and take risks. But that is our gamble and our responsibility and if we slip naturally we rant and let off steam at ourselves -- not anyone else.

I have no choice but to do so although not many employers will take on someone for 16 hours though!

See, posting that sort of a sentence is a big red flag.

You are only studying part time so you have thirty hours or more free to work. Why would you want an employer to only give you sixteen hours of work?

(That is a rhetorical question, btw.)

Well thats weird. I completed my AAT qualification and I could of sworn I was at home. While working full time might I add.

With no experience you are going to struggle big time to find work.

I am a qualified AAT accounting techinician. I can use the letters MAAT after my name as long as I keep up the CPD and pay the annual fee for the priviledge (not that I have!) It took me 2.5yrs to qualify from scratch and I also studied IAB payroll alongside. I didn't rush through but you can if you want. It's up to you to enter yourself for the exams which are held in December & June (resits in September & October) To be fair it's not all that. AAT is seen as the industry bare minimum for a starting salary of 17K plus.

The work you do for AAT always adds up to nice round figures and is NOTHING at all like what will be thrown at you in the real world. I would seriously be looking for some work experience, possibly unpaid, from a local bookkeeper just so you understand how it works outside the classroom. Just you wait until someone empties out a carrier bag of receipts and till rolls out in front of you, then says they can't find the information you specifically asked for. The AAT course doesn't really prepare you for that. I would also say that an accounting technician is no way qualified to go out and work on a self employed basis without at least 2yrs of working supported by someone more experienced and qualified. The magazine that comes with the course fills you full of false hope and confidence but is rather unrealistic.

Sorry for the negative sounding post. Just speaking from my own personal experience.:o
