beds, mattresses, duvets etc - sizes confusion

I'm not sure if this is in the right section, but never mind. It'll have to do.
I'm sure a great many people have noticed this. Some may work round it, some may simply ignore it, and others may just match up the sizes.
Over the years I've noticed something with bed stuff. Obviously you have set sizes from single to king size or if there's anything bigger.
I've noticed that duvet sizes don't fit their equivalent size bed. For some reason, when they increased the standard sizes of beds, they didn't update the duvet sizes to match.
For example, I have a new double bed with mattress and new double duvet. However, the double duvet is just not big enough. It barely hangs over the sides. Just laying there, the duvet hangs evenly over each side by no more than a single centimetre.
This is true with single beds with single duvets and the other sizes. When I had a single bed, I had to make use of a double duvet.
Even though I tend to just sleep on top of my duvet and under a couple of blankets, unless it's winter, I will have to replace my duvet with a king size and buy duvet covers to match the size.
Does anyone know why this is the case?

From Duvetland website.
Duvet size, Guide to duvet sizes
While many of us search the online duvet and bedding sites how many of us actually understand the range of duvet sizes on offer? Duvet size is vital to find something to fit perfectly into your bed as is ever more vital to ensure your bed linen is also in line with your bed size. So what duvet sizes are on offer and how large they?
Single size duvet
This size duvet is manufactured to cover a single bed of dimensions 90 cm x 190 cm (3ft x 6ft 3 inches) with a duvet size of 135 cm x 200 cm (53 inches x 79 inches). 4ft9 x 6ft7
Double size duvet
This will fit a bed size of around 135 cm x 190 cm (4ft 6 inches by 6ft 3 inches) with a duvet measuring 200 cm x 200 cm (79 inches x 79 inches). 6ft7 x 6ft7
King-size duvet
This duvet is 225 cm x 220 cm (89 inches x 87 inches) 7ft5 x and 7ft3 will fit a bed of 150 cm x 200 cm (5ft x 6ft 6 inches).
Super king size duvet
Manufactured to cover a bed measuring 180 cm x 200 cm (6ft x 6ft 6 inches) a super king-size duvet measures 260 cm x 220 cm (102 inches x 87 inches). 8ft6 x 7ft3
While there are other duvet measurements such as the Emperor duvet, the above duvet types are the more traditional used in the UK.
Google really is an amazing tool.
Hope that helps.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
This "helpful" guide is almost guaranteed to cause confusion !
Why give the bed sizes in feet and inches and the quilt size just in inches ???
The quilt for the bed is never long enough anyway - unless you are vertically challenged ! We always get the next size quilt up for the bed we have.0 -
That's why I'll eventually be getting a King Size for my Double Bed.0

I've got a king-sized quilt for our double bed. Which means that I can't buy any nice sets with a fitted/valance bottom sheet because it is always too big!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0

Barbiedoll:
Try going into the bedding section of one of the large department stores (Debenhams/BHS and the like). They offer own brand and named brand (e.g. Dorma) matching bedding that you can buy as separates. That way you'll get a matching double size valance and fitted sheet to go with a king size duvet cover.
That said, we find our King Size bed and King Size Duvet covers are fine with plenty over 'over hang'. We bought ours at one of the Ponden Mill shops.

My mattress sheets which are double sized and elastic round the edges are a tight fit, even though my mattress is standard thickness. I had to use double sheets for my old single bed.0 -

Well, I live on my own and have the most wonderful 4ft bed. It's the best size in the world and I don't think I could manage in a proper single bed. However, I was thinking of buying a mattress topper but of course they make them in 3ft or 4ft 6in sizes. So what do I do?0

If you google 4ft matress topper, quite a few sites list them. I just picked this one, because it was the first one.Never put tables and chairs in the same room.
If they congregate together for any length of time, they will inevitably hatch plots against you and your pets.
