Don't think the bit about stores own brand is true,I bought a Proline product from Comet and they refused to do anything unless I could prove I bought it from them as they said there are alot of outlets selling grade A/B products originally sold by these stores.

Not surprising for Comet:o Many A/B grade appliances are marked as such to prevent this from happening.

It is true that you don't need a receipt for a faulty item, Asda tried to enforce their no receipt rule with my sister for some faulty jeans (own brand). It's a different to returning because they don't fit etc.

B&q only allow exchange refund within 45 days too...not such a lot of time when you're buyingh materials for a DIY job that it might take you a while to get round to! I tried returning unused extra paint, no receipt,no joy but Homebase were more than happy to exchange it for something else.

I noticed recently that Next Directory have reduced their return period to 8 days!
I went in to return some jeans, about 12 days after I'd ordered them but only a couple of days after I'd actually received them and the girl tried to refuse me saying it was over the 8 day period!
I argued and managed to get it credited back onto my account anyway as I'd had it delivered to the store in the first place so they were able to find out that I'd only picked it up a few days before!!
8 days is a ridiculously short time, especially for mail order when a lot of the time you may not even have your order by that time!
Also if you have it delivered to home and want to return in store you have no way of proving what date you received it!
