Thanks all for the helpful advice. I hadn't thought of a stocks and share ISA but this seems like a great option in addition to the regular saver with Halifax we set up for him. We are both higher rate tax payers so it's sensible to stop the gov't getting its hands on (even more of) our money.
I'm off to investigate my ISA and how I save in the stocks and shares part.

Just a word of caution about the purpose of saving:
If you are under any financial pressure, it would be fare better to use the money to ensure that his childhood and education pass as fruitfully as possible. If he grows up to be well-adjusted and successful at school, you can be sure that funding for university will be available in some form. However, if financial stress means that his education suffers, then no amount of saved money would enable him to buy a university place.0 -
A recent article in the Guardian (link here) reckoned that a current average fees and living costs for a university education total about £16,200/year.0
