seomoz is good. Their whiteboard fridays are a fantastic place to start. nice video covering different things each week.
all the basics are online. just google "seo basics".
Nifty little plugin for firefox called senSEO will grade your page for a certain keyword, all these check points are all the onsite stuff you should learn first. If you don't know what it is, google it and learn.
Be prepared for a lot of reading!
matt cutts' blog is good. seomoz, searchengineland, seobook, warrior forums is good for basics. but don't buy anything! Its all out there for free.
If these people could make £1262.56 a day from a method in a £10 ebook they wouldn't be selling it online.
