Impact of living at two addresses

I'm not sure which forum to post to but considering the main question will be about credit rating impact, I'll post it under credit cards.

At present all my financial, banking and credit history is based at my parent's address. I have never changed any addresses when I moved out for university and since coming back. I always complete forms saying I've lived there since birth so I have quite a good credit history.

I live at two different addresses. My partner's place in London and also at my parents, approximately 50:50 ratio in any month. I own neither property and live rent free :)

Now the situation changes. I want to save parking money in Westminster by getting a resident's parking permit. To do this, I need to
- register myself on Westminster's electoral register
- register my car's V5C in London
- have my insurance certificate cover me in London

I understand I can be registered on two electoral registers. My question is how would the above changes affect my credit rating?

I'm not actively seeking any new credit but am on the look out for a more rewarding credit card. I'm also unlikely to need a mortgage within the next 2 years.

Are there other things I need to think about (not necessarily credit related) before I go ahead and change them?

You can't be registered to vote at two different addresses simultaneously unless you are a student living in teporary student digs away from home. To claim this is your situation when it isn't would be a criminal offence so don't do that.

To retain your credit history you'll need to change the address on all of your accounts and the address at which you are registered to vote to your OH's flat in Westminster. Don't leave anything at your old address.

Your credit worthiness will take a temporary hit as you will be considered ever so slightly unstable having moved recently - so you'll represent a higher risk credit wise until you've "lived" at your new address for 12~18 months or so.

It is worth considering applying for your reward credit card before doing the move of your accounts & ER to the new address.

    Good luck! :o

On the voter's registration form it gives me the option of not being removed from my "previous address" for the reasons:
    - I spend approximately the same time in both properties
    - I am a student
    - Other

I think you're allowed to be registered at two addresses. As long as you don't cast two votes in the same election it's OK. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong - surely there are people who have "second homes"?

I know this is probably not the norm so that's why I'm asking what happens to my credit file in this situation?
  • people who have second homes vote at just place,if you are moving your address for convenience then you can only be registered to vote at one of them, the exception is as stated above for students

See this from the Electoral Commission:

"I have two homes. Can I register to vote at both addresses?"

Should be fine to be on electoral role twice as you say you live 50:50 split. If they get a council tax discount for single occupancy they would lose it though.
I would keep everything registered under your parents address for convenience and when you actually move out then change them. This is what I did as a student and it worked perfectly.

Thanks. I didn't consider council tax! I'll need to work out if that will offset any savings...

I think local authorities operate in different ways as only my name appears on our council tax bill despite two other people being registered to vote at the same address.

I see...I get the feeling I'm stepping into a minefield here!

At present it is £150/month for a private parking space. If I get a resident parking permit it's just £132/year = I save £1,668. That's my incentive. I just need to be clear on all the dicincentives and options before jumping the gun.

Thanks to all for advice/suggestions so far.

From another aspect: I checked car insurance prices. It's gone up 90% since last year despite no claims or incidents...shocking...but whether I declare the car in covered or street parking only, or at either address, the difference is less than £50.

Just to let you know it might be fine for council tax but my council investigated us because the electoral role didn't match council tax.
