My PC - what does this mean ?

And what should I do about it ?

I was just looking at parts of my PC that I've ignored in the past, and found something in the "Computer" option that seems a bit odd. Can someone explain it to me please.

HDD (2)

HP (C:) 204 GB free, of 287 GB

Factory image (D:) 1.44 GB free, of 10.3 GB

The factory image "free" 1.44 GB looks a bit low. Is it, and what should/can I do about it ?

Thanks

  • The Factory Image is a restore partition, it can be used to restore the operating system without needing the installation disks. The free space is nothing to worry about, as the size of the image is fixed.

Hi Linda :D my OH sorts PC's and has said your PC is fine :D
The HDD is your hard drive, HP is how much space you have left on your hard drive and the factory image is just what they put on (windows image) so you are ok
    :D
Hope this has put your mind at rest :D

The factory is the manufacturers restore area. You don't need to worry about the space it is only used to return your PC to its "brand new just left the factory" original condition. Hopefully you won't ever need to do that. I do hope that you keep regular backups though.

Oh yes ! That's what I was doing when I came across this little conundrum! The PC came with an external media drive which I b/u monthly and I'm just about to copy my photos (priceless)onto a USB to keep in the safe.

    Thanks for your help.

That's the first time I can recall anyone on here worried that they had too much free space on their hard drive!

Remember anything mechanical will fail at sometime or other, and usually when you have not bothered to do backups, you see people on the forum looking for hard disc recovery purely due to their laziness in backing up. You should always keep your precious pictures/data backed up. Think if at this minute your hard disk failed, what would you have lost that you may never be able to get back.
