of course you can call the helpline.0

I have had cause to write to the DWP in the past to enquire what would happen if........ The answer that came back was that they cannot give a decision on any matter unless the request was based on fact. They are not able to give a 'clearance' for a hypothetical set of circumstances.
So it seems you, like me, have to commit to an action, notify them and then wait for a decision. If you have shot yourself in the foot by carrying out that action - hard luck! You can't undo something that has already been done.
I am not talking of a "hypothetical set of circumstances." First of all you have to inform the DWP of any money etc you receive as soon as possible! Secondly I would ask specific questions regarding your situation and your intentions and ask if it is acceptible - they will respond and tell you if your actions are acceptible or not! I have had experience of this in the past and they were very helpful.Oh yikes i am getting more stressed by the minute.I'm also executor of her will and i feel like i'm going round in circles.I've just tried ringing the CAB but couldnt get through.I've got forms coming out of my ears and i just dont feel well enough to deal with it all.
Could i not just call the benefits helpline, could they not advise me what i can and cant do.I dont want to do anything wrong i just need some help
alihud, take a deep breath and write a letter and take your time with it. Ofcourse you could phone the DWP BUT whatever they tell you, you will not have their advice in writing which could cause problems down the line! You don't know whether the person your speaking to is giving the correct advice!! The trouble with CAB is that they do have experts in this field but sometimes you spend weeks getting the information needed. When you do get the information it is usually full of ifs and buts - best go to DWP direct and ask.0 -

If you need help sorting out the will, the people at the Probate Service are very helpful - https://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/infoabout/civil/probate/index.htm0
