I'm thinking of going to see a new build in leicestershire. I wondered if any of you MSE'ers have dealt with DWH?
I've read the only new build thread, hope that if I decide to go for it that I can get a deal.
I love older houses but want to check out this builder just to see if it comes up to scratch.

I've never dealt with them per se, but they have developments nearby, as do Bellway, Redrow, Barratt and a few others.
Having been in and around a few of these, my impression of DWH is of a competent, middle-of-the-road housebuilder. Nothing in particular to mark them out as good or bad.0 -
Have lived in Leicestershire for 40 + years and have not heard anything bad about DWH, so would have to agree with googler. I have just bought an 11 year old David Wilson house and there do not appear to be any problems. I have to say the whole of the development where I have bought is interesting with a mix of house sizes and types of design making it IMO an attractive area. They certainly resell/rent quickly anyway.
Where is the development you are looking at Mongy?0 -
We moved into a new build DWH house in Leics four years ago.
Ours has been a positive experience, ours was bought with the 2 year guarantee, they give a 5 year one around our way now.
We had a couple of teething issues (as is usual) which where dealt with promptly and efficiently. Always found the site manager very helpful as well.
At the time we chose DWH because they offered a very good P/E deal and had the best design/layout as well.

we have just bought a new home but (bare with me), it can be a little confusing. There is a "David Wilson Homes" estate here but 3 years ago Barrett bought it. As part of the deal, they kept the brand of "David Wilson Homes" and the estate is still called DWH but actually owned and built by Barrett.
There is an estate right next to it called Davidsons (which is owned by the three sons of David Wilson (The person)). We looked at a Davidsons home and a David Wilson Homes (Actually Barrett) one. The Davidsons was 10 times better in terms of quality. We looked at three houses, all the same price and bought the Davidsons one as the quality was so much better.
I hope that makes sense0 -
Hi
We've been in our David Wilson home for almost 9 years, so far so good, teething problems..yes but overall better than your average Barret etc. However they have been taken over but the name remains. In Market Harborough there were a new batch of houses not David Wilsons but his sons, not 100% sure, however they were of a very good build quality, so beware that it might be name only...
Hope it helps0 -

We've lived in our DWH for nearly twenty years with no specific problems.
A couple of things to note though ( and I don't know if they apply to any other builders) our fence panels are of a strange width! They are not a standard "larch lap" type width and every panel you wish to replace has to be cut down to size if you want to use the same fence posts......Most of ours lasted a good fifteen plus years but replacing them has been a bit more expensive than normal.
Our heating is an old style boiler but has served the house well since 1989. All around us now, many neighbours are starting to have them replaced, but I bet the new ones don't last as long!
There were covenants in place back then re not having boats, caravans etc parked on the drives - but I don't think that DWH ever enforced that covenant..........don't know if other builders ever do?0 -

I'm thinking about the new Scraptoft development, on the site of the old campus. I'm in knighton, in a 1930's semi, but want want a quieter life really. I have asked for a ring back from DWH and will get a £10 M&S voucher when I go and see their show home.
Thanks to all of you that have replied. I always check on here before doing anything rash. You are all wonderful:beer:Jan GC £28-49/£120 NSD's 15/17

We bought a DWH in 1982 and are still living in it. We've never had a moment's regret about buying it. Compared to the Barratt and Wimpey ones round here it is very solid, well built and well designed. The layout of the street is much nicer too.
No idea what they're like now though.0
