It depends on the type of meter you need and the tarriff you need to be on, assuming you have gas CH you'll probably just need a single rate electricity meter.
As to the supplier, why not go with the DNO who installed the gas/electric supply to the property, you can always change to another (cheaper?) supplier later on. If you go with the local network operators at least you know they have a facility to fit metering to new installs, they may even do it for little or no cost as they fitted the mains in...worth asking if that's the case.
Also, if your not in a position to fit the consumer unit tails into the meter get them to fit an isolator switch so it can be done at a later date without calling them back out to do it.0 -
Hi and thanks for your info.
British gas installed the supply from the main in the road up to a brown low level mounted box in our garden. Scottish power are doing their bit with electric next week. Should I ask both to supply meters and go with them for supply. Do you think they will supply the meters free. we have already paid a substantial amount to both to actually get power into our boundary from the road as we are converting a coach house and stables and had no power on site. Water is set up and we are ok with that, but not sure how to go about gas/electric.
Any help and advice gratefully received.

British Gas do new installs on electricity meters (I've done some for them) they also fit an isolator as part of the installation, so it may be an idea to get both supplies from them to start with....just a thought.
Not sure if theres a cost involved, at the end of the day they're getting a brand new customer. Most installs I do are on large building sites with loads of houses to do, so you can bet the contractors are getting a good deal. Best to ask the supplier yourself, you never know! Can't see fitting the meters will cost mutch...certainly not the big bucks you will have paid to get the supplies to the property!0
