you can compost most natural garden waste in your compost bin and most kitchen waste but only before its been cooked
    ie/veg peelings
    fruit,apple cores etc
    egg shells

another good idea is to screw some newspaper up and also add that to your compost it gives the bugs air pockets to move round in!!Sounds disgusting doesn't it well give it a couple of weeks and it will also look and smell disgusting BUT it makes fantastic compost and think of how you are helping the earth!!
you need a good mixture of everything in there but don't add shredded paper apparently it doesn't decompose once its been shredded!Don't quote me on that but I read it somewhere.

Leicestershire definitely have the £6 scheme for compost bins. If you have a lot of lawn like we do you can buy up to 3. Form can be found on the Leics County Council web site.

PS well mixed compost shouldn't smell that awful - more of an earthy smell. If it smells bad, add newspaper (as already mentioned), old cardboard egg boxes and other "brown" compost waste
  • Composting bins are available for £6 including delivery, from Winchester City Council website

Don't know what shapes are being offered now, but I have three of these from local council offers. My advice is to buy the SQUARE ones as they kepp more compost and take up less ground space when you have several together. Also if they come with bases don't use them, fut them on to soil as you'll get worms in to help the composting.

Also, warmth helps. And of course the special additive to get them going really well .

If you are going to put in lots of grass layer it with some dry material (or newspaper) or you'll end up with a black "tar like" sludge. Still works as compost but smells and is difficult to work with.

    I love my composters
  • I got my compost bin via the recycle now website. Same offer - a massive bin for £6 including delivery. Plus I got a free mini caddy to keep in the kitchen to save having to keep trotting out to the bin. It came with a roll of biodegradable bin bags too!
