Sainsbury Credit Card application a PAIN?

I've applied for a Sainsbury's credit card (the Nectar one, 0% for a year).
I've sent off my ID signed by a Police Officer and a solicitor 3 times so far and they KEEP asking for ID 'certified by an appropriate person, such as a bank official or solicitor', according to their letter. Well as far as I can see I've done that, yet whenever I ring them up they mutter dark things about needing it 'stamped' by a solicitor and it will probably cost £5. Which they make no mention of in their letter, of course.
I've wasted an hour of my lunch hour chasing round all the high street banks to see if they would certify it but they all refused, saying that they would only certify applications for internal products now. And Sainsbury's stated on the phone call that it 'had to be a solicitor', contradicting their own paperwork.
I've given up and have applied to Barclays and M&S instead - has anybody else had the same problem?

Take it into a Halifax branch.
They run the Sainsbury's credit cards, so Halifax branch staff can take a copy of your ID and send it straight up to Sainsbury's via internal post.0
