Can I extend an existing loft conversion?

We're buying a turn-of-the century terraced house which had a loft extension done probably about 10 years ago.
The dormer has not been punched out as far as it could have been meaning we're missing out on extra space.
Is it possible to extend the dormer to make the loft extension bigger?
Is it a big job? Does it require planning permission? How much roughly would it cost?

Thanks diable.
What does anybody else think about my loft conversion question?0 -
You need to talk to your local planning department - there are quite a lot of rules around dormer windows - especially if it means increasing the extension sizes on an already very extended house. If the dormer is at the front of the house, then you definitely need permission. And obviously you're messing with a very important part of the house with the roof - so you definitely need building regs approval for this kind of job.0

Thanks mate.
But is it possible/common to enlarge a more old-fashioned loft conversion (often smaller than modern day conversions)?
It is it a huge job? Or is it not so much of a big job because a loft conversion has previously been done?
And how much would it cost? Is it cheaper because a lot of the work is already done? And it can be done without PP (but with building regs)?0 -
You might want a quick chat with building control to see if they would require all of the loft conversion brought up to modern requirements (they've changed in last ten years), or just the bit being enlarged.
Be aware that permitted development rights for loft conversions have been tightened up in the last couple of years - especially with regard to how set back the dormers have to be.0 -
If the dormer is on the front roofslope of the dwelling then to enlarge it will require planning permission. If it's on the rear and you don't live in a conservation area, AONB or National Park, then it could be permitted development, but there are a few criteria you need to comply with - have a look at the planning portal website under the permitted development section to see if you comply with these criteria.0

I'm sure it would be possible if you get can get the right planning permission etc.
It would still be a big job though.0 -
It doesn't have to be a big job necessarily, get a loft conversion specialist company to give you a free quote, you have nothing to lose, I've done mine with bluelime lofts and they've done a brill job, on the price as well. I can give you their phone number or you can find them on internet.0
