Halon Green Fire Extinguisher

Err, in my new garden I've found one of these green fire extinguishers dated 1960 something.....Err, their illegal to own, illegal to discharge so I phoned local fire brigade who tried to help, but won't take it or collect it. Err, where do I go from here??? Found it in corner of shed....Any ideas???? Here's me trying to do the right thing & even the fire brigade won't dispose of it for me. I don't even know if its stable. I don't want to go anywhere near it....

Try the local council refuse department, or failing that if they are illegal grass your shed up to the police :)

But why would the fire brigade dispose of it for you? They are a fire fighting service not a waste management service.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

It would have been nice if they had just dealt with it, however they couldn't even advise me where to go or who to go to with this problem

Its not illegal to own ! illegal to discharge yes as its an ozone depleting gas. Contact you local environmental health dept at the council and ask them for advice.
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

I just googled what to do with your fire extinguisher ,and it said to take it to a local civic waste site ,but to ring first to check they accept them !!

It also said if they dont accept them then to contact the Halon Users National Cosortium on www.hunc.org who can advise you of your nearest place

  • Hi,

I'm a bit later replying, but if you still have your green extinguisher you may be interested.

I own a fire safety company and whilst looking for a disposal partner I discovered the MoD will actually purchase Halon from you. The MoD are still allowed to use Halon, but as it's no-longer made they want to get their hands on any stocks that are available.

We regularly decommission Halon based extinguishing systems, and sell the cylinders to a contact by weight. Even if you have just a small unit it may be worth a look.

Thanks very much. I did manage to contact a local hazardous disposal waste company who took it away for me free of charge......(in a bomb proof container). It was still fully charged they told me.

Darn - Maybe I could have made a bob or two ;)

    But thank you anyway
