Benefits and Self Employment

Hi all,
As of tomorrow I will be unemployed (lost my full time job - will probably goto employment tribunal but thats another story!).

Anyway - I also have a small business (spend the equivalent of a day or two a week on it) this is generating a small amount of money - but not enough to write home about (maybe £200 profit per month - but there are two of us who run the business (part time).

This is obviously not enough to live on, and will be looking for another job in the meantime.

Will be ringing JSA claim line tomorrow, but just wondered if the fact that I have my own business (albeit not making much money - and not taken anything out regarding salary etc) will this affect my claim for JSA??

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

You should be entitled to JSA as long as you meet certain criteria as being available for and seeking work, savings threshold, work less than 16 hours and income below £70 approx.

If someone is claiming income-related benefits such as income-based jobseeker's allowance,Council Tax Benefit and housing benefit, they will have to show the DWP or local authority evidence of their income and business records.

You are entitled to a £5 disregard.

Contact the benefit enquiry line on 0800 055 66 88 for more information.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
  • Thanks - I'll call them in the morning and see what they say.

    Cheers
