Jack and Jill ensuite - what's that?

Options
as is my habit I peruse the property page in the local rag and look at what I'd buy IF my ship came in via Fort Knox.

And there's a penthouse flat on offer (in an exclusive suburb of Valliland) which includes a Jack-and-Jill ensuite. DD thinks it might be for two to share at the same time.

I wondered if it was uphill and whether pails were involved...

Anybody KNOW what a Jack-and-Jill ensuite is?

A jack and jill ensuite is a bathroom that is shared by 2 rooms. It will have 2 doors - 1 to each of the bedrooms. When you go in to use it, you lock BOTH doors so that the people in the other r0oom can't use it. Then when you have finished, you unlock BOT doors, so the other room can use it.

Why would you need to lock the door that leads to your bedroom?

..so that whoever shares your bedroom doesn't accidentally wander in to the bathroom whilst you're expelling the after-effect of the previous night's curry ...?

    ewwww

so, in other words a Jack-and-jill ensuite is a bathroom they couldn't build access for from a landing;)

and NOT really an ensuite as such...

Technically, it is an ensuite as you can access it from the bedroom. True Jack and Jill Bathrooms can only be accessed from 2 bedrooms, not the landing. They were very popular in the 1960's and 1970's in cheap spanish hotels.

My mum and dad had an avocado one in the 70s. She just permanently locked the other way in (to the spare room) and stuck the wardrobe across it on the other side.

Why lock the bathroom door against that? Unless it was to keep the people from Narnia out of the bathroom.

Seems a sensible thing to do to keep the door locked if you've got an Avacado suite. Would you want anyone to get in and see that.

  • Doh, I always thought it meant there were two sinks so "Jack" and "Jill" could brush their teeth at the same time :o
