I have had this problem for a while and decided to get it sorted once and for all

I looked in Haynes manual and its R18/R19 relay in fuse box under glove compartment

I ordered a part which was the number on relay. The old relay appears to work for both front and back, front is fine.

Well today I get the part its a single relay, they told me at ford garage it should work for both. I tried it in R18 socket, front wiper works but not very well it gets stuck while its wiping, same problem with the rear. They told me they dont do a double relay now as it had problems

I get another relay and so now two separate relay independent of each wiper. front works fine and rear still wont work properly it gets stuck midway.

So now wasted £44 and back to where I was yesterday

Any ideas. I had a quick word with mechanic there he said it may be motor but he seemed unsure

I wondered if there was some reset, how does it no where it is the wiper if it isnt parked properly in first place

Cheers

How a wiper motor works is that there are THREE feeds. There is a constant live, a switched live and an earth.

Inside the wiper motor assembly is a switch which is usally nothing more than a small gap in a circular track on the back of the big gear thats driven by the worm wheel on the motor. This cuts the power to the motor when its at the park position. What happens when you press the wiper switch for a once off that the switched feed goes live and starts the motor moving and keeps the switched feed live to get the mechanism rotating past the park switch. Once its passed that point, the constant live feed keeps the motor rotating until its once again got back to the park position where the switch in the mechanism cuts the power to the motor.

For constant wipe, its the same as above except the switched feed is constantly live until you turn it off and then the constant live feed takes over.

So what are the possible faults?

    1) There is no constant live feed to the wiper motor so it can't continue to the park position.
    2) The mechanism it uses has slipped so the "switch" or gap in the track is in the wrong position for park.

I'd be checking the constant feed to the motor and then if thats OK, taking the wiper motor apart and having a look
