What is this noise?

Hi guys, i am hoping someone in the know might be able to help me, i have a really annoying noise on my computer.
I aint really very technical so please try to keep it simple for me...
The noise sounds like a pop up blocker sort of noise (similar to an elastic band) .
I have checked my pop up blocker and it tells me that everything is working as it should...
anyone got any other ideas of what it might be and how to get rid of it please..

Do you use (or do you have installed) AOL Instant Messaging? That has some really irritating noises to signify various events - one of those has as a default a sort of twanging sound.0
