Radiators going cold one by one???

Hi all,

A colleague has just been asking my advice about the radiators in his new house. I've got a fair idea what it might be but thought I'd ask you lovely people for your comments.

He moved in around a week ago and the radiators were working fine but then a couple of days ago he found that one by one (One every day) they were going cold to the point where he now only has two working. He doesn't have TRV's on any of the rads and it appears that they have gone cold in order of where they sit on the flow path. I dont know this for sure but from how he's explained it, it sounds like it's the natural path for them to be plumbed.

Anyway, last night he did a bit of googling and found a forum suggesting that sometimes TRV's get clogged up with carp and to give them a gentle whack with a screwdriver handle. So despite not actually having any TRV's, he decided to give the standard rad valves a good hard tap. Hey presto this morning he finds that the radiator he abused is luke warm.

I've suggested that the system is clearly sludged up and him knocking the valve had loosened this somewhat to allow a little hot water through but not enought to unblock it completely.

Soooooo, does it sound like a good time to power flush? (my suggestion) or is there anything esle I'm missing? Any advice gratefully received. :D

  • Either the pump is slowly failing, or yes - you need a good powerflush.

Get a few quotes for flushing, how many rads does he have? we charge £350 for 10 rads and that includes all the chemicals, but it varies from place to place.
