Alternatives to kitchen shelves

Hi
I did start this on shabby-chic forumbut haven't got any specific ideas from there so I suspect this is a better place.
I have access to really good wine/champagne wood boxes (free) and to eastern european crates at a very cheap price - could I make a cottagey type of kitchen shelving (painted or otherwise) rather than the really ghastlyand VERY badly put together melemine type 'fiitted'(lol) cupboards - and they really are V bad - put together from melamine offcuts altho doors do match.
Kitchen is smal and very dark and also quite chilly (although it does have a fairly level floor now - small glow of pride)
Would like it too look cottagey and old style - any ideas or opinions welcome!
