Options
need advice as when I phone eon get nowhere. Am currently in a 3 bed house have battled with elect payments which reach about £170 pm asked for it to be checked when I got into debt, eon guy was sent out but commented to me "you on gas this is a meter for storage heating" It was flooded and wet due to flooding 2 yrs ago as well. I agreed to install a pre pay meter on the spot as it seemed better, as he guaranteed cheaper bills, he then left the bill on my kitchen counter which stated that eon have been trying to get in so was penalised by 150 pounds!! he was lying, also charged huge amount to install meter so all in all about £500 on top of what I owe, I dont understand, he came in I let him in and showed him the meter as I am convinced it was faulty!
I am now paying £55 per week on a top up on the meter on average! he said he set it to take £5 a week for the outstanding amount which leaves me paying £50 a week for electricity. Am I being ripped off, my neighbours pay £40 per week but with another elect co!!

I pay £20 for a 3 bed terrace that also takes into account £3.50 a week arrears. HTH0

Before the meter exchange did you owe them money? Have you ignored any letters about repaying the debt? If so it is possible they wanted to install a ppm and by you phoning them and letting them in it has saved them getting a warrant and possibly forcing entry. If this is not the case maybe they have got the wrong address (it happens).
In terms of cost, it may be that your meters (old & new) are set for E7 (elec heating) which means you pay less than average at night but pay a premium during the day. You need to check with your supplier if this is the case. The problem is that people convert from elec to GSH and fail to inform their supplier (which they are required to do). Some time later someone realises they are on E7 instead of 24/7 and need to change tariff.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi Des01,
Welcome to the forum :hello:
There is already some excellent advice from spiro, I agree to check if you are being billed on an economy 7 tariff, this can be changed easily if needs be, E.ON can just change the tariff to a one rate and you won't need a meter change.
It does sound like you have had an outstanding balance on your account and we have put in the pre-payment to collect this, to incur the charges for this we would have sent a number of letters first, did this happen?
Have you checked how much the meter is collecting for debt each week? I understand the engineer said £5 but you can check this yourself by inserting your key in to the meter and checking the settings.
If all is correct, I would suggest getting in contact with E.ON's consumption department they will go through your usage with you and help you reduce this.
I wouldn't suggest comparing how much you spend with your neighbours, as there are so many varying factors, you also need to use your kWh for accurate usage.
If I can help any further, just let me know.
