blackberry problem - roller stuck - can I retrieve messages

Hi, I've got a blackberry which, as it says above, the roller has stuck and won't navigate around. I can't get to my text messages, and if I take the sim out it doesn't have all my old text on there - including some I don't want to lose! Is there any way of retrieving them and saving them to the sim??

You may be able to unstick the roller.

I had this happen once, and there was something stuck in there that I got out by applying firm pressure.

It is also possible to take out the roller, depending on the model; I was rescuing some phones from a junk box at work, and was swapping rollers about - if they have a small round bezel around them then you can just put a fingernail in the gap and prise it out. The ones I looked at (Pearl 8100 & Curve 8310) had the outer ring, a second thin metal ring with two lugs on it, and the roller mechanism.
It's easy to put back too, just be careful with the lugs on the thing ring.

In the worst case, you should be able to get a replacement roller (eg. ebay).

    .....

On the PC side, there is a Blackberry desktop app you can download and install.

I did it a couple of weeks back and it seemed straightforward.

thanks - it's a curve but the roller is set in a square-ish metal ring - will have a poke about though. I've got insurance with my barclays additions, and they've said to send it back and it will be replaced (this is the third time it's frozen) but I don't want to lose messages and numbers if I can help it.

I'll have a look at the download as well - thanks.

with Blackberrydesktop manager (free from RIM) installed on your PC you can backup the data from your blackberry. If you're getting a replacement blackberry, any mode, you can then restore the data to your new device.

If your not replacing the blackberry, this tool, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/ABC-Amber-BlackBerry-Converter.shtml

can extract the data from the blackberry backup files created by desktop manager
