Central heating problem - control panel and motorised valves need replacing

Hi everyone,
We have a problem with the central heating in our new property. To start with, the central heating will not come on unless the hot water is switched on. Secondly, we set the programme for the heating and hot water to come on at a set time whilst we were out. When we came back, although the red lights on the Honeywell control panel lit up at the set time, the boiler had not fired and the heating did not come on at all.
We have been quoted 400 pounds (including VAT) to fix this by a local registered gas/central heating fitter. He says this will involve replacing the motorised valves for the hot water/hot water for central heating, and also replacing the control panel/thermostat and all the associated electrics.
Is this fair? Advice greatly appreciated thank you

the parts will be about 100 quid so the total price would be approx 300/400 quid. ish.Get some gorm.0

Hmmm, I would think you just need to replace the valve head.
Obviously can't be certain from here, but sounds a bit extreme to replace all those parts.
Get a second opinion/quote and don't mention the first one at all.0 -
How about using somebody like BG that offer a fixed price repairX British Gas engineer and X BG sales adviser.
Please don,t let this put you off.0 -
Cant see how all the parts you mentioned would of failed, sounds like the engineer is changing the lot as he cant be sure what is has faulty.More then likely as mentioned just the motorized valve head which is most the commen part to fail.I would get another engineer who can fault test0

just sounds to me like he doesnt know what the fault is.
More than likely just the 3 port valve or the central heating valve isnt opening.
may even just be a £25 syncron motor inside and 30mins work0 -
manualy open the mid postion valve ( there will be a lever at one end) if the pump runs and the boiler fires up you will find it is the mid postion valve, when moving the lever you will feel a little bit of resistance, hope that helps0

OP says valves so thoughts of a 3 port valve may be wide of the mark.
Most likely the head on the CH valve. Take the head off and see if it operates when heating is switched on and off. If not there is your peoblem. 5 mins to fit a new one.
I think replacing everything is a tad extreme.
