Sweating without a fever

I wonder if you lovely mums can help.

My son has run a temperature of 104 for the last 24 hours. He has rallied at various times of the day, with the help of ibuprofen and calpol.

He has been burning to the touch but dry.

Tonight I have been in to check on him and his temperature is right down but he is soaking wet.

I have never experienced this with him during his 7 years. Does this signify the end of the fever and the illness is being sweated out, or do you think the thermometer is wrong (ear one!)

Thanks

  • Perhaps it's the calpol that has brought the temperature down. Sometimes when my DD is unwell she is sweating but feels cool to the touch. I can't really advise you but if I were you I'd call NHS24 just to make sure.

  • Might be worth checking his tonsils as lots of tonsilitis with a fever doing the rounds at the moment

My son can sometimes be soaking wet with sweat when hes not well, far better than the fever he sometimes gets.

  • When you sweat it is because your temperature has broken, it is an excellent sign, the thermometer is not wrong. Temperature tends to go up in the evening and may well break in the early hours and you wake soaking wet.

If you are shivering with a fever then teh temperature is going up and you need to be aware of that.
  • Fantastic,

    Thanks all.

He woke a little later than usual today and despite being pale, he is doing everything he did 48 hours previously.

I at least know the signs to look out for now.

It started with him burning to the touch, then 12 hours later, began shivering and the temperature hit 104. It then stayed at this level for 24 hours, calpol and ibuprofen reduced it for short periods.
He did nothing yesterday, just lay, and wanted to be under a duvet, then after a dose of medicine last night, became really sweaty and the temperature dropped massively.

    Thanks again.
