Are road signs on a private road legally enforceable.

I know it is a bit "off topic" but if double yellow lines etc are not enforceable on private roads does it follow that road signs such as speed limits and indeed traffic lights are also not legally binding ?

Probably. But if you have an accident on a private road to which the public have access because you ignored the speed limit or a traffic light then normally the RTA rules will generally apply. I said normally and generally for the benefit of the pedants.

Any marking or signs not covered by a regulation or order would only be advisory, but not enforceable, I would think.

If you think about council DYL its not the lines that make the offence its the traffic order!

I suppose the reason companies use them is because every driver should know what they mean! Of course they could also be there to generate cash for the PPC's!

I'm sure that's spot on but if the road was public and then became private would any regulation or order automatically lapse or would it still apply.?
The reason I ask is that this exact scenario has happened to a road I regularly use i.e. was public but now private. However all the council erected signs and markings remain in place ..are they enforceable ?

Also I notice that numerous offences in the RTA refer to "a road or other public place" . It doesn't say a public road so presumably these sections of the RTA can be applied to private roads also ????

Any solicitors in the house ??

Not a solicitor but the term I've heard relating to this is - "anywhere the public can be reasonably assumed to have access" So I would take that as covering a private road too, unless it was gated or otherwise restricted for access.
