A communal hallway with 1 lightbulb (in a house containing 3 rented flats). I pay about £100 a year for this because EDF say this account for the one lightbulb has to be separate from the 3 flats and cannot be held in one persons name which means that it has to be a business account incurring higher tariffs. Is this right???
thanks
ps if I could switch to another company and have it registered as residential I would pay about £30 but to switch EDF have to declassify me as a business which they won't do......

What is the primary use of this hallway?
If, as it sounds, it is primarily domestic then you should be able to receive the energy at least at the domestic rate of VAT (even if they treat you as a business customer).
Even if the supplier won't allow you a domestic tariff, they should be able to supply a tariff that is competitive to most domestic tariffs. I was quooted recently on a business basis for a small company and the prices were very competitive - no where near 3x the price you suggest (unless you have found a supplier that would normally charge £100 a year but perhaps offers £70 a year fixed discount for some reason)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
If you are a LL then renting the flats is a business and expenses associated with that will be a business expense. On that basis EDF will classify the account as business not domestic.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
