Car Insurance Mistake

I sold my ford focus in december and then bought a newer version. i told my insurance company about the changes and all i thought was well. the money came out of my account so i was under impression i was insured. yesterday i got pulled over only to be told i have no insurance on new car. when the police checked they said the policy was still active but on old car. i've contacted my insurance campany who say they have no record of a call being made. no i don't know what to do. take points or take it to court and show i had insurance but for some admin reason it was never changed. any suggestions???

You are heading for an IN10 conviction, 6 points and sizeable fine.
Contact the insurer in question and tell them when (date and time) you called them. Ask them to refer to their call recordings and find yours. Struggling to remember? Did you call using a mobile? Check the call records. Use a landline? Check itemised bills.
Ask them to write to you confirming receipt of your instruction and to confirm you were covered on the day in question. You may have to pay increased premiums from the day of your call to date if you haven't paid enough for the cover for the newer car.
Once you get your confirmation letter, you can take this to court to defend the charge. It might be worth coming over here for full advice;-

Did you pay an increased premium?
Did you get paperwork - certificate/schedule?
I would write ask their data protection department for a SAR (subject access request).
They can only charge a max of £10.
I did this before and got a transcript of every phone call.
It is your responsibility to make sure you are insured so if you didn't get the new schedule/certificate then I think that MAY reflect badly on you as ultimately it's your responsibility to be insured.
However I am not a lawyer and you should get proper advice.
There's a good site called pepipoo (or something like that) that may be able to help you.
Generally it isnt' a good idea to go to court with a weak case as the costs and penalties can be worse than accepting fixed penalties, so you first need to establish what you position actually is from proper advice (not what you think is fair but how the legal system will perceive it).
I would certainly ask for the SAR as a first step.0
