Hi
Ok, this is a little bit longwinded, basically I currently own an MX5 that is insured through Esure, fully Comp, etc etc, 7 years no claims. I am lucky enough to be getting a brand new MX5 which is due to be delivered next Friday, and obviously I will be transferring my existing car insurance policy over to my new car.
The thing is , I dont intend to sell my old car for probably another month, it wont be used, but locked away in my garage. Obviously I need to keep it insured during that time. I have contacted Esure today, and for only 3 weeks cover on this second car they want to charge me £86! Perhaps I am being a little niave, but to me this is a ridiculous amount of money, especially when it wont be used.
So I guess the question is, what options do I have, does anyone know of a company or insurance broker I can deal with to get resonable cover for this short period of time.
My second question is on my new Mazda , I had a couple of extras fitted, nothing drastic, just a chrome Petrol Cap, Chrome Indicator surround and chrome grill, all in all think the extras cost me about £200. Again I rang esure today to find out what the addtional cost would be to cover my new car until the existing policy runs out (26/4). Its going to cost an extra £12 which is fine, but they also want to bump up my theft excess by an additional £100 because the 'extras' make the car more desirable to steal .
Does that seem fair, or excessive? To me its seems pretty OTT, I could understand if I had had upgraded Alloys added to it, or similar, but not little 'touches' like this, if Im honest I nearly didnt even mention them, bacuase I thought they would be irrelevant.
Anyway, I would be really grateful for peoples comments and advice as to what options I have. Didnt realise buying a new car could get sooo complicated
Thank you in advance !!
Kind Regards

This may or may not help.
If you are thinking about changing insurance companies,Liverpool Victoria don't charge extra for any modifications (Except internal engine) to you vehicle, but check this still applies.
I moved to them when Direct Line wanted an extra £150 from me to fit a set of 18" wheels to my Audi.
Not sure about the first question though, but a was charged about £5.00 for a day and about £8.00 for a few days to insure a Peugeot 205 gti for when i wanted to drive it to do a trackday.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
Regarding the question of covering your old car while waiting to be sold. Many of the traditional insurance companies e.g. NU, Cornhill etc would provide what I think is called 'laid up' cover, for exactly this situation, and it would usually be for a nominal cost e.g £10 or so mainly to cover the admin. However, with the recent introduction of direct and online insurers alot of the skill and reasonableness involved with underwriting has gone out of the window. So when an out of the ordinary query is raised, what appears to be an unreasonable amount is charged, partly I assume so this cover is not taken up or if it is they will get more money for it.
That I suspect is the answer to the other part of your question, when telling them about the extras, it would have meant they would have ticked that box, the computer would then have instructed them to increase the theft excess. There is unlikely to be any room for discussion, a like it or lump it way of underwriting I'm afraid.0 -

What alot of insurers do is charge extra for the modification eg wheels but if they get nicked they only replace with the wheels that come as standard !!!0
