Thanks everyone, she's been on the 'phone to me about 5 times this evening, telling me more that she has read about it. Apparently they have the choice of flying out or back and cruising the other way so they're planning on flying out to New York a couple of days early and spending some time there before the cruise starts. Wish I didn't get homesick when I leave our Postcode, she asked me to go with her but I just couldn't do it.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams

The QM2 is a beautiful ship - I work in cruises and she will have a ball - literally! Hope she packs her glad rags for the formal nights
If she is looking for reasonable, but nice hotels in New York - I would recommend the Flatotel - its a really nice 3*
