in Cutting tax
received 2 letters today and at a total loss on understanding it if anyone can mull over it, i have no p60s
tax year 2007-2008 tax year 2009-10
underpaid 1469.38 underpaid 1411.80
do i need to pay both sums or just the latter?
i have been getting income tax code changes through out the year adjusting my code saying i have under paid tax. i have a firms van i use for work which i use for personal use.
tax paid
paye income 27609 4870.20
van benefit 2771 000.00
benefits in kind 462 000.00
totals 30842 4870.20
personnal allowance 5225
so 30842-5225 = 25617 were i pay income tax on this ammount which i paid 5368.14
i dont remember earning 30k i am probably wrong but it looks like they have added the van benefit onto the money earned instead of it being all together.
plus it states other adjustments of £971.44 which brings my tax payable to £6339.58 so a shortfall of £1469.38.
hope some one can make sense of my post i have some wage slips with a tax codes rangng from 151t and 201t.
i have been with my company for 4 years and have always opted for private use of the van
cheers Mark

It should be just the latter....does the 09/10 calculation include an adjustment of £1469.38 anywhere, i.e the 08/09 underpayment ?
The van benefit has correctly been added onto your salary to arrive at the correct taxable figure. Do you know what the benefit in kind of £462 relates to, you should receive a P11d every year showing your taxable van benefit and other benefits.0 -
never had a p11d form
the benefit in kind i have no idea i thought is was fuel for van as personal use.
the van use for 2009-10 is £3000 and benefit in kind of £500
i have an adjustment of £1660.62 on this p8000 -
Did both P800s arrive in the same envelope? If so there should be a '15' on the right hand side of the 09-10 P800 against the £1411.80 figure? That would signify the combined total underpayment (for both years) is that figure?
Common sense suggests these are seperate figures and the total underpayment is therefore £2881. But the fact you don't have a P800 for 08-09 makes me curious that the van benefit may have been coded out after 07-08? If you don't have P60s ........ what Code Number was in use on your payslips at the end (March 2010) of 09-10? As that might give a clue.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
cheers, both p800s arrived in same envelope and i have my last p60
the final tax code was 151t/M1
it does have a 15 after the final figure. There is a friendly note on the letter stating although my codes have been adjusted to pay for previous underpayments i was not paying enough and this is the figure they have come to.0 -
the final tax code was 151t/M1.
Which implies the benefit in kind is now coded out.it does have a 15 after the final figure.
......... which makes it certain that the £1411.80 is the cumulative net underpayment covering both years. The coding out must have taken place some time ago as you must have been mildly overpaid in 09-10.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
