Help whilst working short time

Hello all,

I have been told that my hours are going to be cut down to three days a week, which will be either 16½ or 16 hours per week.

My partner is in full time work.

Basically is there any sort of support, possibly income support I can get whilst I am on short time.

My employer does not know how long this situation will last for, it depend on wether or not work comes in.

Fortunately I've not experienced redundancy/short time for about 16 years so I've not got much idea.

If it makes a difference they are terming this "short time" not "Lay-off"

  • You will not be eligible for Income Support, you may be entitled to more tax credits, if you have no dependant children this may be working tax credit, you may also be eligible for Council Tax Benefit and if you live in rented accommodation then you may get some Housing Benefit.
  • I also found this useful link which suggests that you may also be entitled to some contribution based job seekers allowance for the days you don't work

you wont be entitled to JSA as you will be working part time, and you wont get IS either as 16 hours work your wage will be more than the £57 IS, and you also have another wage coming in.

As already suggested, ring tax credits and they might make an adjustment, or get another part time job to boost your hours up to full time :)

Thanks all, I have since found out that I might be able to get contribution based JSA if I work less than 16 hours a week, which could be arranged.

I am considering another part time job, but I need to consider what will happen when the company want to put my hours back up. Thinking allowed, it could be grounds for sacking me if I don't turn up when they want me, due to my having another job.
