I had connected up the aerial that was removed from the chminey.
The picture was good enough when I stuck it out the window to convince me that it was the right way up.
"Good enough" for Analogue might not be good enough for digital a for digital it works or it doesn't with very little in between.
A picture of your current aerial would give us more idea of what it is like, try to provide some scale. As closed has said we have very little info on the Aerial type.
Post the info provided on the wolfbane site I linked on the previous page, it will show quite a bit of info and recommendations which should help us.
Your loft could be affecting the signal by the roof tiles, things in the loft or even the roof felt. If there is anything which severely affects the signal then you probably won't get it working in the loft with any aerial no matter how big or high gain.
Here is a site showing terrain between two points that can indicate if the local terrain could affect the signal. I have a large hill between me and the transmitter which does clip the signal a bit.
Remember the info from wolfbane as it will provide a lot of info on your Aerial requirement.0
