Quaver, don't forget that your child will have control over the CTF money when they turn 18. I'm not so sure an 18 year old sees that housing costs are a great way of spending a windfall cash sum so it might not be wise to treat the CTF money in the same way as the other investments you make on her behalf.

I agree and so although i do plan to add some cash to the ctf the majority of future savings my partner and myself are able to make for our daughter will be via an ISA or regular savings account in our names to ensure (as someone quipped earlier) "it isn't all spent on Budweiser"!
  • I don't want to add to the CTF but I do want to risk it. It seems such a paltry amount of money so I am keen to stick it in some Asian stocks preferably either Japanese or Chinese for the next fifteen years or so. Can anyone recommend a fund that will do this for me without requiring monthly or annually deposits?

I have just applied for Britannia savings account (non-stakeholder account). I can always move it if there are better deals out there in the future, but got to start somewhere :)

Seems the best for my needs as i'll add a £10 a month to it, my main savings for my daughter is with A/L as the child benefit get paid into it and we top that up and we have alot more control over the money! Just a shame we can't put the CTF into the A/L first start account we have, seems mad that the child benfit can be paid into it but the CTF can't!, it because of the withdrawls that we can make i know :). wish we could tick a box to promise to to withdraw :)

Anyway the ctf account will be her money to do with what she wants, where as the A/L account will be more substatial in 18 years time and we will make sure she buys us a porshe each:) oooo, errrmm i mean invest it in property :rotfl:

I've applied for a Britannia savings account over a week ago. Haven't heard anything, no confirmation. Will I get any confirmation, or just an annual statement ?

Thanks. Thinking about it, they'll probably want me to pay monthly into the account, and no way am I doing that after reading this thread.

Don't take it all as bad news, your son/daughter may not want to blow it all on drink etc, anyway so what! just put a tenner a month in, that can be there fun money when they are 18, i know i would have loved that! and save some serious money for them else where and use that for college, first car, wedding etc! you never know teach them the ways of MSE early on and they may invest the "CTF - Fun Money" in something they need!

Trying to turn all this negitivity into a positive :)
  • Just thought I would add that I have put my lil lads voucher with the Teddy Trust from the Forresters Friendly.
Main Reason is that it could perform better that a savings account but not as good as something invested in Shares etc, but however He will get all the money back that is put into that account plus the money it makes through the investment and a bonus on top of that.

At least I know I can always move the account if it starts to perform badly or if I feel that its not for that type of investment.

Thought I would share what I have done with others.

Given that the deadline has come and gone, I assume at least a percentage of us must have put money into one account or another. My question therefore is if anyone has had any response? My guess is that the accounts hyped by boots, mothercare, the post office and such (homebuyers and teddy trust?) will have been swamped, as will britannia (for having the least restrictions on 6%!). Have any others had any response from their application forms?

I for one have had no response in almost two weeks from my britannia application. Pretty poor start to our relationship, in that time I've setup a coventry BS child benefit account, had my cashcard for it and been sent internet signon details.
