Should I bother ? Problem with gas suppliers

I wrote about this problem in other post before, but I am unable to solve it so far. Maybe somebody did experienced it before.

When I moved to my flat I called TRANSCO and found out that they have 2 different meters registered at my address. One meter belongs to British Gas, the other to Scottish Power. Conclusion: I have 2 gas meters and 2 different gas suppliers. Is it possible?

I know that it happens, you might have 2 suppliers when switching (1 meter), but 2 suppliers and 2 meters ????????????

I have registered wityh BG and I pay my gas bills to them. In the meantime Scottish Power is keep sending bills addressed to previous occupant (he didin't pay and didin't close the account). Because of unpaid bill I assume they probably will arrange gas disconnection soon. Do they have any right to do that when I pay my gas bill to BG?

I would like to solve this problem once for all. How can I found out which company is my real supplier? I can't expect any help from my landlord - I ask him many times but he pretends he doesn't know anything :(((

Turn all your gas appliances off, check which meter(s) is standing still. Then turn everything on full blast and go back to the meter. The one which was previously stationary and is now whizzing aroung is your gas meter. Write down the serial number and call Transco on 08706081524 (ignore the voice recognition system wait for someone to answer). They will tell you who the supplier is for that meter.

I would agree with the above advice. In addition I would take meter readings for them both a couple of times a day for a couple of days, to check one isn't working during the day and one during the night for example.
If both of them are working, then they are either both yours, or one is actually someone elses (could one of them be a neighbours for example? - a computer may have got your neighbours meter listed as yours) If there is any possibility of that, it's probably worth checking with any neighbours that they have their own meters in their property. If one of your neighbours doesn't have a meter then you need to get the meters investigated as to which meter supplies which property.
If both of them are yours and showing usage (and that could be the case) then you need to ensure both suppliers have your correct details and the date you moved in.
If one is not actually moving at all, it could have been attached to something in the past (say a separate heating system or something) and is now not in use. If this is the case then you need to get that meter removed, if so phone the relevant supplier and ask them to do this for you. They should be able to confirm by past meter readings if it hasn't been active for a while anyway and the most you should be responsible for is a bit of standing charge on a meter that isn't active.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
